Maria G.Ocanto

mariaocanto.com

Maria G. Ocanto is a New York based video artist, musician and dancer. She is interested in the complex relationship between image, presentation and sound, the power of editing and the beauty and tragedy of individual perception. Her work integrates formally composed imagery, layered sound, intimate settings and personal subject matter. Her themes tend to explore bodily fragmentation, meditative states, private rituals and the nature of female role-playing through the process of performance and improvisation.

All of my work has been engaged with the investigation and presentation of a feminine viewpoint through the stressing of identity, character or role-playing. Through the act of performing and recording various scenarios I try to examine and mediate what is considered feminine in our society. My past experiences with dance, music and performance are foundations that inspire me to continue exploring video in a larger capacity through installations, live performances and collaboration. I feel that through representing a “persona” or a specific feminine identity a powerful tool can be wielded in dissecting and questioning feminine traits and behaviors in our everyday lives.

Artist Statement

I am interested in exploring feminine archetypes in my work and how I can investigate and dissect societal constructs from a pure female viewpoint or expression. In my videos I focus on the complexity that exists between the image, the presentation and the sound. This interplay between elements is what engages me with this medium and challenges me to constantly look for new means of expression within its varied combinations. Through the use of performative and improvisational techniques I strive to make the work immersive for the viewer. The final outcome usually has a visceral and at times voyeuristic dimension.

My visual approach comes directly from working for many years as a painter and photographer. I frame and compose my shots carefully and use strong colors to heighten the effect of the choreographed movements or actions. Initially I may have a single visual image or form that I develop through the use of sound, movement improvisation and personal narrative or experience. I use the sensory dimension of the work and try to juxtapose it with an interesting structure or compositional strategy. The combination of sensory tactic in contrast to the more formal compositional language are two modes of approach that I consistently explore within my work.

Thematically all of my work has been engaged with the investigation and presentation of a particular viewpoint through the stressing of identity, character or role-playing. My themes tend to explore bodily fragmentation, meditative states, private rituals and the nature of female role-playing through the process of performance and improvisation.

Through the act of performing and recording various scenarios I examine and mediate what is considered feminine in our society. I feel that through presenting myself as a specific female character or “persona” a powerful tool can be wielded in the questioning of feminine traits and behaviors in our everyday lives.

My professional goals are to continue to develop my work stylistically, conceptually and thematically. To further engage the viewer with unique presentational strategies and unexpected use of sound and imagery and most importantly to continue to grow as a person, a teacher and an artist.
